William Arthur Gregory was the only child of Stuart and Helen Gregory. He was adopted as an infant and has no idea who his biological parents are. His parents were very open with Liam, as he insisted on being called, about the fact that he was adopted. They insisted that they loved him just as much, if not more, than if he were biologically his. The family hailed from Washington DC, where Liam was born and raised. And it was there that Liam fell in love with the theatre.
It all started when he was five. Helen signed him up for piano lessons, and Liam was set. He excelled at the instrument and would find himself singing along. This prompted his parents to sign him up for vocal lessons and the community theatre circuit. Liam acted in many productions throughout high school, but it was around that time that he started writing his own music. Liam had always enjoyed making up his own little melodies and that progressed throughout high school and college.
Liam moved to New York after he graduated from college and continued working on his writing, performing in small things now and then when something really struck his fancy. In May of 2001, Helen passed away after a long battle with breast cancer. Liam was devastated. She had been his rock, his support, and his motivation for his entire life. The attacks of September 11 a few months later furthered moved the young man, and he poured his heart and soul into his new score: Elegies: A Song Cycle. It was his first worked that was produced on a professional scale, and it was well-received, and got his name out there.
In 2004, while he was performing in Stephen Sondheim's Assassins, Liam worked on a new show, a funny show. [title of show] It was written in a very short amount of time and put up at the New York Theatre Festival. Over the next few years, the show gained more and more momentum, with an off-Broadway run, a cast recording, and a popular internet campaign to move their show to Broadway (which Liam would like to point out that it was NOT his idea). Finally, [title of show] was given the green light to go to Broadway in July of 2008. Liam and his friends were thrilled.
Stuart, Liam's adoptive father, passed away at the beginning of 2008 from a heart attack. The two men had become rather close after Helen's death, but Liam internalized this latest blow to his family, rather than writing a musical about it (that is not to say that he hasn't been pounding away at his piano). He still has no idea who his biological parents are, though he is becoming increasingly curious after losing the parents he knew. Liam hasn't looked because he is bitter about the fact that they gave him up in the first place.
RANDOM FACTS: - He publishes a very well-known blog in the theatre community where he praises and satirizes Broadway performers and shows. - When he's not writing or acting, Liam works as musical director of various shows and events. - He's a loner. Liam loves the friends he has, but he is scared to get close to anyone. - He is openly gay. - Liam has had a barrage of horrible relationships in the past. He can never seem to be happy. - He is a BIG fan of Sondheim.
